Film Introduction

KISHI Yoshiyuki | 2022 | 134 mins | Japan | Color

Kayo Agawa works at a convenience store on a modest salary while volunteering as a probation officer. More than her own happiness, she cares deeply about whether the ex-offenders she supports can rebuild their lives in society. Just as her model case, Kudo, is about to finish his parole, a string of murders occurs—and Kudo disappears. In her search, Agawa encounters Detective Takimoto, her former lover, forcing them to confront painful memories. Between tragedy and redemption lie many broken hearts.

What keeps Agawa going? Can someone who has committed a serious crime truly start over?

Based on the popular manga Prior Convictions, which was previously adapted into a TV drama, this new feature film by director KISHI Yoshiyuki shines a light on Japan’s probation system, little known to the public. Starring national sweetheart Kasumi Arimura, former Johnny’s idol Go Morita, and rising talents Hayato Isomura and Shizuka Ishibashi, the film depicts a harsh world filled with both love and hatred. Kasumi Arimura brings warmth and hope to souls lost in darkness, offering ex-offenders the strength to move forward. A truly compassionate society is not only about punishing crimes, but also about catching those who fall, carrying scars inside and out.
